Artist Statement: Driven by concept, steeped in symbolism, my work delves into the shared histories of humans, as told by animals. Borrowing from Native American, Aboriginal, Hindu, Buddhist, Biblical and other ancient cultural traditions, I find similarities in symbols, story, and message, using animals to invigorate the sense of humanness and shared narrative. Philosopher Joseph Campbell said, “Artists are the modern day Shaman”, and I seek to further this tradition by using animals as characters in my work, just as from Aesop to Orwell, and countless cultures throughout time have used animals to tell their tales. I seek to provide a sanctuary in my work where all are created equal, and by avoiding the human form, everyone is invited into the narrative, to project onto the animals their own story or emotion, providing endless interpretation of each piece.
