Printmaking Methods

PROCESS

My artwork revolves around printmaking processes, which involve the creation of a matrix or block which is then inked, and pressure is applied through my printing press.  I love sharing my process, so if you want to see my printing presses in person schedule a studio visit!

RELIEF ENGRAVING

I make traditional hand pulled prints called "relief engravings.” They are in the block print or relief family of printmaking, which refers to two surfaces, one lower than the other, so that the highest surface prints. I hand carve each image with small but tough tools called burins, or gravers. The remaining surface is rolled with ink and pressed through the printing press. Each print taken from the plate is part of an edition, and numbered.

MIXED MEDIA

Many of my colorful pieces are called “Mixed Media Monoprints.” Since these pieces combine unique processes such as traditional drawing and painting methods, they are one of a kind (mono), and they contain elements of the printmaking process (print), hence mixed media monoprints.

Multiple plates are inked and printed, then cut carefully and collaged in compositional formation. The result is a delicate and detailed mixed media artwork.

I print multiple plates then carefully cut the images and collage them together to make a new  compositional formation.  I often combine topographic maps, handmade papers, gold leaf and other stunning additions to these pieces.

LETTERPRESS

Letterpress is one of my first printmaking loves, and I have been reintroducing it to my fine artwork. Letterpress involves setting individual type representing letters from the alphabet to make words. The letters are "locked -up" so they are tight and won't shift during printing.   I pair my favorite quotes with my relief engraving images for a twist on the traditional print.

WOODCUT

I also work on wood or MDF (medium density fiberboard). Wood is softer than my engraving material, so I use gouge tools instead of my engraving burins. Woodcuts offer larger scale but less fine detail.  They are printed the same way, with ink rolled on the surface and pressure applied by the press.
